Dr. Aaron Charlton is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Marketing. He started working at Illinois State University in Fall of 2019 shortly after earning a Ph.D. in Marketing at the University of Oregon. Prior to entering academia, Dr. Charlton served in the U.S. Army as an Infantry Captain with deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. He also worked for seven years in digital marketing as an analyst and manager. His specialty was search marketing (both paid and organic).
Dr. Charlton has two main fields of research that he engages in: (1) brand strategy and (2) research methods. His dissertation was on brand latitude, which is the idea that some brands may have more freedom to engage in unusual advertising and political advocacy. He has also done research on sponsorship, and is currently conducting a large meta-analysis on the way that researchers use a specific statistical technique. The objective of the meta-analysis is to determine how reliable the evidence is within the field of marketing.
Note: If you are an ISU student who is interested in going on to get a PhD in any field, please check out Dr. Charlton’s Metascience & Marketing (M&M) Lab. M&M Lab helps involve undergraduates in real scientific research at an early stage of their college experience. This is one of the best ways to prepare for future graduate studies.
Dr. Charlton teaches the Integrated Marketing Communications (IMC) Capstone and Marketing Research courses. Each of his classes involves a team project working for a real-world client (usually a non-profit). He employs a flipped classroom approach, such that students can expect to actively participate during class rather than listening to a lecture. Students are expected to complete assigned readings and videos prior to coming to class.
