Session 1/August 28, 2020 – Professor Peter Foreman

MAKING BETTER DECISIONS

Remember the last time you made a major purchase and then a few weeks later began to feel like you might have made the wrong choice? How often do you look at mistakes made by those in government and ask yourself “how could they be so stupid?”  Unfortunately, as we know all too well, individuals and organizations frequently make bad decisions or poor choices.

In this seminar we will examine some of the most common reasons for these mistakes. In particular, we will discuss six specific decision-making biases or heuristics that often lead to flawed thinking and imperfect choices. We will engage in a couple of games or exercises, so come prepared to interact and have fun - and learn how to make better decisions.

Peter Foreman is an Associate Professor of Management in the Department of Management and Quantitative Methods.  He received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois.

Session 2/October 2, 2020—Professor Rick Ringer

WHY LEADERS FAIL

Our studies of leadership often focus on the attributes of successful leaders—and we are encouraged to “emulate” in some way those successful leaders.  However, there is much that can be learned from “ineffective” leaders.  That is, examining leader mistakes and failures can help us become more effective leaders.

This session will focus on that issue and examine those most critical traits, approaches, and behaviors that contribute to leadership failure.

Rick Ringer is a Professor of Management in the Department of Management and Quantitative Methods and Director of the Organizational Leadership Institute.  He received his Ph.D. from the University of Colorado.

Session 3/October 23, 2020—Professor Rick Ringer

IT’S BEEN 20 YEARS.  WHAT CAN WE STILL LEARN FROM ENRON?

Nearly 20 years after its bankruptcy, ENRON still provides key lessons for leaders.

This session will examine, though the use of a movie, key leadership lessons from the ENRON collapse.  In particular, the session will focus on leadership as it relates to organizational culture and ethics.

Note:  Because of the length of the movie, this session will end at 10:30 AM.

Rick Ringer is a Professor of Management in the Department of Management and Quantitative Methods and Director of the Organizational Leadership Institute.  He received his Ph.D. from the University of Colorado.
