Phillip S. Clary and Lee Ann (Baker) Sauers both attended ISU as non-traditional students seeking a future career in accounting. Both graduated from Illinois State University in the spring of 1983. But, as far as they can remember, they never met while at ISU, even though they were pursuing the same major, had the same professors, and were both initial inductees into the Beta Gamma Sigma academic honor society. Phil stayed at ISU to pursue an MS in Accounting and Lee Ann began her career as an auditor at Laventhol-Horwath’s Chicago office. They finally met when Phil accepted an internship at Laventhol for the 1984 audit season. They married in 1985 and have remained in the Chicagoland area ever since.
For both Phil and Lee Ann, ISU was a restart to both their personal and professional lives. The years spent at Illinois State gave them a great foundation for their careers, and without ISU they would not have found each other. With that in mind, Phil and Lee Ann established a scholarship to assist non-traditional students, including married students and students with children, pursuing degrees in the College of Business.
